Resumen : Los cuidados paliativos se aplican desde el diagnóstico de la enfermedad hasta el estadio final de la vida, ayudando al paciente a prevenir y aliviar el sufrimiento psicológico, espiritual, social, económico y el duelo. Uno de sus objetivos es mejorar la calidad de vida incluyendo el entorno familiar. Cabe recalcar que la atención paliativa no es solo una necesidad del envejecimiento sino también de enfermedades crónicas avanzadas, tomando en cuenta que el accionar asistencial se basa en principios bioéticos como la no maleficencia, beneficencia, justicia y autonomía. El paciente y su familia pueden obtener así bienestar físico, emocional, social y espiritual mejorado la calidad de vida. Los cuidados paliativos en el Ecuador tuvieron su inicio en el año 1973 mediante la iniciativa Amigos Benefactores de Enfermos Incurable (ABEI) y posteriormente en el año 1997 se creó la fundación Ecuatoriana de cuidados paliativos (FECUPAL) aprobada mediante Acuerdo Ministerial No. 1058 del Ministerio de Salud Pública del Ecuador el 16 de Octubre del año 1997. Actualmente en el país se brinda estos cuidados en unidades de atención de primer y tercer nivel. Existe un marco legal y normativo relacionado a los derechos de la salud, la Constitución de la República, El plan Nacional del Buen Vivir, la Agenda Social de Desarrollo Social y los Objetivos del Milenio, Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible, MAIS. El accionar de Enfermería abarca todas las etapas de la vida incluyendo los cuidados paliativos y el duelo ayudando a enfrentar el paso de la vida a la muerte.
Descripción : Palliative care is applied from the diagnosis of the disease to the final stage of life, helping the patient to prevent and alleviate the psychological, spiritual, social, economic and grief. One of its objectives is to improve the quality of life including the family environment. It should be emphasized that palliative care is not only a need for aging but also for advanced chronic diseases, taking into account that care actions are based on bioethical principles such as non-maleficence, beneficence, justice and autonomy. The patient and his family can thus obtain physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being improving the quality of life. Palliative care in Ecuador began in 1973 through the Friends Benefactors of the Incurable Sick (ABEI) initiative and later in 1997, the Ecuadorian Foundation for Palliative Care (FECUPAL) was created, approved by Ministerial Agreement No. 1058 of the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador on October 16, 1997. Currently in the country these care is provided in first and third level care units. There is a legal and regulatory framework related to health rights, the Constitution of the Republic, the National Plan for Good Living, the Social Agenda for Social Development and the Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development Goal, MAIS. The action of Nursing covers all stages of life including palliative care and mourning helping to cope with the passage of life to death.
