Descripción : The purpose of this work was to generate geo-statistical information about the land use of the herbaceous moorland in the provinces of Cañar, Azuay, Loja and Zamora Chinchipe; for this purpose, high-resolution satellite images from Landsat 8 were downloaded and pre-processed by using the (GEOBIA) object-based classification technique. The segmentation provided 1,876,324 objects in 62 quadrants of20 x 20 kilometers, 16 indicators were used, from which 12 are related to vegetation and 4 to the elevation model. In addition, through the application of artificial intelligence algorithms, 200 decision trees were generated considering five different indicators and it was found that the most accurate (93%) included the following indices (VARIG, NBR2, EVI2, MED and Slope). It was quantified that the moorland ecosystem presents an extension of401,161.832 hectares; from which, the Herbazal class moorland is predominant with an extension of 161,911.340 hectares (40.36% of the territory studied); asserting that the intervention class presents an area of 146,037.068 hectares (36.40%), evidencing a severe implication of it in the EP; while the forests, water and snow types present 61,404.225 hectares (15.31%); 27,915,614 hectares (6.96%) and 3,893.583 hectares (0.97%) respectively. It was verified that the method of classification based on objects and the use of high resolution images facilitate and optimize the integral evaluation in considerable changes of the moorland ecosystem and with extensive applicability for related topics.
