Descripción : Dental caries is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide, for its detection different methods have been used that aim to effectively diagnose the injury ranging from visual and tactile inspection through digital radiography, transillumination and laser fluorescence, until reaching more developed methods such as ICDAS and NYVAD. The objective of this study was to calculate, determine and test the degree of accuracy and validity of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS), which compared to the NYVAD system, improved performance in terms of sensitivity and reliability. For the investigation, a descriptive study was conducted in which parameters of the two caries assessment indices (ICDAS and NYVAD) were evaluated in 101 children of the Alfonso Villagomez Roman Pediatric Hospital in the city of Riobamba in which the superiority was determined. of the ICDAS system concluding that more than 90% of children evaluated found advanced dental caries with loss of surface continuity, contributed to the detection of caries in the early phase and at the same time established the severity and level of activity of the same coming to consider it the ideal method for the diagnosis of the carious disease. The present research work took bibliographic references from the year 2010 including articles, reviews and comparative studies which demonstrate the reliability and competence of the use of the ICDAS system as an efficient method for the detection of caries demonstrating its high degree at the time of diagnosis, locate and to describe early caries in parameters that no other method of diagnosing caries has.
