Authors: Yagloa Ruiz, Wilmer Samuel
Description: Conversion to Protestantism has been one of the main adaptation strategies for Indigenous communities in the face of profound social, economic, and cultural changes. Among the various processes of Protestant intervention and literacy programs within these populations, the dissemination of the language and the local reading of the Bible in vernacular languages were fundamental objectives. This study on the contribution of Protestantism to the literacy and vocational training processes of the Quichua Indigenous people in Chimborazo during the period 1950–1970 arises from the gaps and ongoing debates in national and Latin American historiography regarding the relationship between religion, education, and social transformation in Indigenous communities. Hence, the primary objective was to describe, from a historical perspective, the role of Protestant missions in the literacy and vocational training of the Quichua indigenous people in Chimborazo between 1950 and 1970. Through historical and social research, using a descriptive approach, a series of tools (interviews and surveys) were applied to ensure an in-depth, meaningful analysis validated by the dataset obtained. It is concluded that the success of literacy was not an isolated process, but rather formed part of a comprehensive educational strategy integrated with spiritual development. Through the use of the Quichua language as its primary vehicle and the implementation of innovative resources, teaching overcame significant barriers present in the local context. Furthermore, a transformative impact was observed on the local power structure; through literacy and the reading of the Bible, a transition was achieved from the indigenous person’s perception of themselves as a farm labourer to that of an individual aware of their rights and even possessing their own leadership. There is a perception regarding the causes of the current educational impact, which does not depend on the density of missions present between the 1950s and 1970s, but rather on the persistence of a significant human capital that was developed over the long term.</summary>

Authors: Artos Tapia, Jessica Alejandra
Description: An analysis of the historical process that led to the designation of Guano Canton, Ecuador, as the "Artisan Capital of Ecuador" sheds light on the elements that facilitated its recognition at both local and national levels. The research is framed within the qualitative paradigm, employing an analytical-hermeneutic scope and a socio-historical approach. A diachronic and retrospective design was adopted, grounded in the triangulation of oral testimonies and documentary sources—including semi-structured interviews with elderly artisans—as well as direct observation of artisan workshops and representative production sites. The results reveal a historical continuity of artisanal activities in sectors such as carpet weaving, textiles, leatherwork, and stone carving, sustained by the intergenerational transmission of knowledge, the organization of family labor, and adaptation to economic and tourism-related changes. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the "Artisan Capital" designation is not merely a formal acknowledgment but represents a historical and symbolic construct that integrates sociocultural, economic, political, and institutional factors—ranging from the development of local markets and the implementation of public policies to the valorization of intangible cultural heritage. The study concludes that Guano has shaped its artisan identity through a dynamic process in which tradition and adaptability to contemporary contexts have ensured its endurance over time. However, challenges remain regarding formalization, technical support for artisans, the visibility of the full range of crafts, and the sustainability of knowledge transmission. Consequently, this study provides an interpretive foundation for designing strategies aimed at strengthening artisanal heritage and linking it to local development.</summary>

Authors: Ortega Donoso, Carlos Leonardo
Description: This research analyzes the clothing and chant of the animero in the parish of Santiago de&#xD;
Quimiag as expressions of popular religiosity and intangible cultural heritage, using an&#xD;
ethnographic approach to understand their symbolic meanings, cultural functions, and the&#xD;
transformations this practice has undergone within the contemporary sociocultural&#xD;
context. The main objective was to analyze, from an ethnographic perspective, the&#xD;
clothing and chant of the animero to understand the meanings attributed to them by the&#xD;
community and their role in collective memory, popular spirituality, and local cultural&#xD;
identity. To achieve this, a qualitative ethnographic methodology was employed.&#xD;
Fieldwork was based on participant observation during the animero ritual, complemented&#xD;
by semi-structured interviews conducted with individuals directly and indirectly&#xD;
connected to this tradition, as well as photographic documentation of the principal ritual&#xD;
elements. This approach made it possible to reconstruct the experiences, meanings, and&#xD;
transformations of this practice from the community's perspective. The findings reveal&#xD;
that the clothing of the animero constitutes a set of symbols associated with penance,&#xD;
purity, sacrifice, and spiritual commitment. At the same time, the chant functions as a&#xD;
form of ritual communication that calls the community to pray for the souls in purgatory,&#xD;
strengthens collective memory, and reinforces community identity. Furthermore, this&#xD;
cultural expression reflects a process of cultural hybridity in which elements of the&#xD;
Catholic tradition and the Andean worldview converge, maintaining its relevance despite&#xD;
the transformations brought about by modernization and the limited generational&#xD;
succession. The analysis is grounded in Victor Turner’s theory of ritual and Néstor García&#xD;
Canclini’s theory of cultural hybridity, which make it possible to understand that the&#xD;
clothing and chant of the animero are symbolic expressions that preserve historical&#xD;
memory, strengthen cultural identity, and contribute to the continuity of the intangible&#xD;
cultural heritage of the parish of Santiago de Quimiag.</summary>

Authors: Guayanlema Basantes, Kerly Celeste
Description: This research documents the historical evolution, contemporary transformations, and current state of the stonecutters’ craft in San Andrés Parish as a form of living heritage, through an ethnographic and oral history approach. The main objective is to record and analyze, through the study of operational chains (chaînes opératoires) and the direct testimonies of master artisans, the value of local cultural identity and the importance of safeguarding this traditional know-how. To this end, a qualitative methodology based on ethnography and oral history was implemented. The fieldwork was based on participant observation during the development of the operational chain, which made it possible to document the direct interaction with the raw material. Accordingly, in-depth, on-site interviews were conducted to reconstruct the historical and social memory of the most experienced practitioners of the craft. These findings were complemented by a review of local sources. The results demonstrate that the stonecutters’ craft, as a form of living heritage, not only reflects the artisans’ technical skills and the effort involved in their work, but also constitutes a fundamental expression of community identity and a symbol of collective pride. The artisans seek to transmit this traditional knowledge to future generations and to the wider community. The analysis draws on empirical evidence and theoretical perspectives from the anthropology of techniques and cultural technology. Marcel Mauss’s (1979) concepts of “body techniques” and traditional effectiveness, Pierre Lemonnier’s (1992) analysis of technological systems as social representations, and André Leroi-Gourhan’s (1971) concept of the operational sequence provide a framework for understanding that stoneworking is not merely a mechanical activity. These theoretical contributions support the idea that material culture is intrinsically connected to collective dynamics and complex structures of social transmission, in which technical gestures and tools embody the historical memory of a community</summary>
